The Brecon’s Bash

The Gap Brecon Beacons

Before we get started with this one, yeah yeah, I know there is no such place as the Brecons, but I didn’t create this route and I didn’t name it, The Brecons bash is the name of the route on bikepacking.com so that’s why I called it that.

This is a nice short route around the Brecon Beacons about 65 miles, and it’s perfect for a little overnighter, but just because it’s short it doesn't mean it doesn’t pack a punch, it does it’s wales and there is plenty of rugged rocky steep terrain to get over. But it’s probably a great place to start if you have ridden some bikepacking routes around England and want to take it to the next level, but bear in mind some of these trails can be tricky to ride, and dangerous, so proceed with caution. Look after yourself out there.

I’m sure some people would ride this on a gravel bike and I have ridden most of these trials on a gravel bike before, but it is so much more fun on the MTB, you can really have fun on them descents. As it’s pretty short it could be done in one go in the summer or, for me, it was the perfect micro winter adventure.

Starting in Merthyr Tydfil and finishing in Abergavenny, it makes this a route that is easy to get to the start and get home from the finish as both towns have train stations. It’s a great introduction for a short Welsh MTB adventure, that you will enjoy an epic climb up the iconic climb “The Gap” Happy Adventures.
